Soffit, Fascia
What is a soffit? Fascia?
A soffit is installed on the underside of the overhang of your roof. A key function of the soffit is to assist in ventilating the attic. The air from the soffit cycles to the vents to draw heat and moisture away from the house, preventing the moisture from rotting the rafters. Most soffits are made from vinyl because of it’s ability to withstand the heat and moisture.
A fascia is a flat band that goes around the roof right under the surface. It’s primary role is to act as a guard between the edge of the roof and the environment, which protects the wooden board from water damage in harsh weather conditions. Aside from the functional role it plays, it also creates a more aesthetically pleasing finish for the home.
The majority of newer homes feature both a soffit and fascia boards but older houses still lack these components. If your home lacks these, you should highly consider installing. Also, keep in mind, these components go hand in hand with your gutters and downspouts.
